ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION FADING AS AN ELECTION ISSUE

According to an article on chron.com:  “Once billed as the hot-button issue for the 2008 presidential race, pollsters and pundits expect illegal immigration to fade from the spotlight heading into the November general election.”

In my opinion, it’s for the best.  The rhetoric that is regularly spewed in the immigration debate only riles people up and does not lead to any constructive solutions.  Furthermore, from a political point of view, a strong immigration stance will do more harm to a candidate than good.

Those running for Congress could stand to learn from the mistakes of Romney, Tancredo and other candidates whose names escape me.  Even McCain’s campaign suffered because of his sensuble immigration stance.

ARE HATE CRIMES TIED TO IMMIGRATION DEBATE?

According to an article on abcnews.com:  “The national immigration debate is driving up the number of hate groups in the country and fueling attacks against Hispanics, according to a report released today by a civil rights group.”

If true, this would not surprise me.  I hear and read such hateful comments regarding the undocumented that I now listen to meditation tapes rather than talk radio as I drive to work.  Maybe Congress should take a deep breath and meditate before tackling the immigration issue again so that we end up with a comprehensive solution that, although not perfect, would address the problem as a whole and end the hateful rhetoric that cable and radio personalities use for ratings and politicians use for votes.
